The suburb that I live in set a new record low last night… -30! And that doesn’t include wind chill. It is so so so so cold outside! We have about a foot of snow on the ground and more to come, tomorrow I believe. The geniuses who built our house built it with the vents on the ceiling instead of the floor… That means our first floor is about 10-15 degrees cooler than our second floor because the heat doesn’t start out on a vent on the floor and rise to the ceiling and warm the room as it rises…. We like to keep the house at 68 during the day and 64 at night (to bundle up in blankets). We went to buy a damper to close off the vents to the second floor but they only had 6”. We need 12”. Although all of the vents upstairs are closed, a lot of air is getting lost traveling to those closed vents. Our first floor heat rises right back up to the second floor. Our kitchen was 56 degrees this morning! Yikes! I keep a little space heater in the office I work in all day and I open all of the blinds in the front of the house to heat the house during the day (I work from home), it works pretty well, but at night and first thing in the morning… brrrrrr! I do like the cold weather, just not when our heating system stinks!!
